This mornings walk was cold and damp, and to think, it's supposed to be 80° this afternoon.

The chicks are gone and the nest has been torn up.  Tragedy has struck.  So sad....

 The chicks are 17 days old today.

Mrs. Hummingbird

The chicks are 16 days old today.  Their eyes are open and they are aware of me when I approach.  I'll have to stay further away from now on so I don't frighten them out of the nest.

The hummingbirds are 15 days old today.  Peek-a-boo!

Mockingbird Nest

 It seems the mockingbird nest had a tragedy last night or this morning.  Yesterday there were three and today there is only two.  I know there is only one in the nest pictured below, but when I looked a few minutes later there were two.  Also there was a "poof" of feathers on the grass a few feet from the nest.

Two weeks old today.  Their eyes are just beginning to open.  Apparently it didn't like what it saw because that eye went closed right away!

13 days old today!  Look at their feathers!  That even looks like a wing.  They should be ready to fledge in a week or so.

Chris has been out clearing the brush for a couple of weeks now.  About two-thirds complete now, the end is in sight.  At least for this season.

Mockingbird Nest

The mockingbird chicks are getting big.  Maybe another week and they will fledge.  Mom and Dad fiercely defend the nest against all threats.  I got swooped on, screeched at and then Mom stood her ground between me and her nest.

The hummingbird chicks are 12 days old today.

Boy, were Mom and Dad angry that I was looking in on their chicks!!

 The chicks are 11 days old today.  The nest is about 1 and 1/2 inches tall and 1 inch in diameter.

Mrs. Hummingbird spends much of her time away from the nest.  She stops in to feed the chicks and spends the nights.  As you can see, there just isn't very much room.  The chicks are 10 days old today.

The chicks are 9 days old today.

On day 8 the rows of pin feathers are more apparent.  I can see one green feather on the bottom of the nest, must be one of mom's.

The chicks are 7 days old now.  How long before they become the cute little birds we are used to seeing?

Here are the chicks on day 6.  Mrs. Hummingbird was away from the nest so I couldn't get a picture of her.  As I came home from dinner she was back on her nest keeping the kids warm again.
