Maclay High Line

As I try to find more about the history of the land Oakridge is built on I learned this:  Some of the water for the north east San Fernando Valley ran right through the middle of Oakridge in a water line known as the Maclay High Line.  The water was sent to the Maclay Reservoir, which is still there, near the intersection of Eldridge and Astoria.  That bridge we see east of Eucalyptus St isn't just a bridge, it is the conduit itself propped up so it looks like a bridge.  At regular intervals there are man hole covers in the park that must have been used for inspection and repair in the past.

Perhaps you've seen them.  The concrete looks old.  They date back to 1917!
Mr. Reichert, these things must have been an obstacle at one time, do you have any memories about them?

Chris Kip remarked that at one time while he was working here, in the 70's I think, DWP put water through the conduit and water was leaking from the seams on the bridge.  This is the place where I came across the surveyor's benchmark that Mr. Barker was kind enough to explain for me.
